ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Saturday met Minister for Interior Affairs Chaudhry Nisar and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and discussed the recent US drone strike with them.
According to media reports, General Sharif also discussed peace and security situation in the country, including the National Action Plan. He also inquired about the health of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is in London for an open-heart surgery.
The meeting came following reports that a US drone strike had killed Taliban supremo Mullah Akhtar Mansour near Balochistan. Washington said it had killed Mansour because he was a threat to the US troops stationed in Afghanistan.
Pakistan had severely condemned the drones strike, saying it was an attack on its sovereignty. The army chief had also raised the issue in his meeting with US Ambassador David Hale.
The US and Afghan governments said Mansour had been an obstacle to a peace process that had ground to a halt when he refused to participate in peace talks earlier this year. Instead, he intensified the war in Afghanistan, now in its 15th year.
