ISLAMABAD: The 135th birth anniversary of the father of the nation Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was celebrated on Sunday with national spirit and enthusiasm across the country.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on the occasion said parliament was the supreme institution as envisioned by the Quaid and it was a representative body of the people. Talking to newsmen after visiting the mausoleum of the Quaid, the prime minister said the parliamentary form of government was the best way for accountability.

He said the Quaid did not want a presidential form of government rather he desired a parliamentary system. "I pledge before the mazar of the Quaid that we will respect all institutions and take them along," he said, adding that under the vision of the Quaid, the mandate of the government, that has been elected by 18 crore people of the country, should be respected.

Federal Information Minister Dr Firdaus Ashiq Awan also paid rich tribute to the founder of Pakistan. She said the Quaid was an ardent supporter of democracy and he gave the message of unity. In Khyber Pakthunkhwa and FATA, the birth anniversary of the Quaid was observed with a pledge to strictly adhere to his golden principles of Unity, Faith and Discipline to make Pakistan a stronger, developed and democratic welfare-state. National flag was hoisted at all government buildings in all major cities of Khyber Pakthunkhwa and FATA to pay homage to the great leader.

The day dawned with special prayers in mosques for the Quaid, and for prosperity and development of Pakistan. A number of political, social, cultural and educational organisations organised different programmes to mark this momentous occasion in a befitting manner. In this connection, a function was arranged by the old students of Edwards College, Peshawar, where speakers paid glowing tributes to the father of the nation.
