LAHORE/PESHAWAR/KARACHI: Punjab Governor Makhdoom Syed Ahmed Mahmud on Wednesday dissolved the Punjab Assembly on the advice of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
As per details, the governor signed the summary regarding the dissolution of the assembly submitted by Chief Minister Shahbaz. The chief minister had sent a formal summary to the governor, advising him to dissolve the provincial assembly.
The move came after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif spoke about the assembly being dissolved, at a press talk in Lahore on Wednesday. Three provincial assemblies of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan had been dissolved on March 19. It must be recalled that the PML-N had been facing criticism over its reluctance to dissolve the Punjab Assembly after the dissolution of assemblies in three other provinces.
PTI chief Imran Khan had said that the Punjab rulers were trying to stick to power to influence the elections. He had urged the Election Commission of Pakistan to take notice of this. After the Punjab Assembly dissolution it is now being hoped that elections for the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies can take place on the same day.
Opposition leader in Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz Ahmad said that names of Justice (r) Syed Zahid Hussain and Hafeez Randhawa have been forwarded for caretaker Punjab chief minister.
Talking to media on Wednesday, he said the names of Mian Amir Mehmood and Asma Jahangir have been dropped from the list. Meanwhile, Justice (r) Tariq Pervez was administered oath of office of caretaker chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday. He vowed to meet the responsibility judiciously and responsibly.
"Let's hope I accomplish the mission (of holding polls and ensuring peace also)," the caretaker chief minister wished moments after provincial governor, Engineer Shaukatullah, administered him the oath at the Governor's House.
The ongoing negotiations between the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on interim government in Sindh concluded on approval of Justice (r) Zahid Kurban Alvi as caretaker chief minister of the province. Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan will administer him oath of the caretaker CM today.
End.
