ISLAMABAD: President General Pervez Musharraf has taken serious note of unprecedented upsurge in the price of essential items during the holy month of Ramadan and called for explanation from the respective ministries on hike in price of flour despite bumper crop of wheat this year.

Well placed sources told Online Sunday that the president has asked the ministry of food and agriculture, ministry of commerce and ministry of trade and production to clarify their position as to why the flour prices soared to Rs 20 per kilogram in the open market despite record wheat production of 22.5 million tones.

Sources informed the President has also expressed his concern over skyrocketing prices of vegetables, pulses, fruit, ghee, oil and other edibles and directed the Government to take immediate steps to bring the prices within the reach of common man. The elements who are found indulged in profiteering and hoarding be dealt with sternly, he added.

Sources indicated the President has directed Governors of all the four provinces to visit the markets and take action against the profiteers who are involved in loot and plunder spree in the holy month of Ramadan.

A high level meeting will take place under General Pervez Musharraf within a few days in this connection and Aiwan-e-Sadr has also issued directives to all the ministers to work out detailed briefing regarding their respective ministries for presentation in the meeting.

President has also taken serious notice of non-implementation of Ramadan package and issued directives to the government to ensure availability of essential commodities in the market during the holy month of Ramadan.

Reader Comments:

Profiteering does not increase wealth.

Well, it seems probable that as in the politics, the Maulanas also are in religion practices fit this adage: Is hamam may sabhi..." Islam starts from society's reform and advancement. The power hungry clerics declare that the Sharia's "nafaz" will solve "all" our problems. One doesn't see the solution of even minor problems in the Sharia-based Saudi Arabia. Sharia doesn't allow concentration of too much wealth in a royal family. There is worst type of profiteering in both Makkah and Madina sharifs. There is too much ritual but little substance. Allah is the most compassionate; He might occord forgiveness to all Hajjes. But here in this world Saudis are the worst offenders of Islamic values. Islam's teachings start from raising the standard of living of a society. It needs to repeat here that "Sadacat" giving and receiving brought a radical change in the early years after Hijrat. A piece of "Khajoor" was promised to grow as big as the "Ohad" mountain. People do give Sadacat in Makkah and Medina but they do not convey the message that Sadacat erase poverty. There are too many people at the time of Hajj, who are poor and needy and lay at roadsides. Why spend billions on "brick and mortar". Some of the billions should be channeled into education and knowledge. Pakistan is one of few countries, where Sadacat and Zakat is rolled out in billions. However, the spirit and the message is not conveyed. Once a person received a "Sadqa", he can spare part of it and give or share with a needy person. That will bankroll his first ever investment. Who can increase the volume and value of a piece of Khajoor equal to a famous mountain? Who, indeed, but only Allah does it. And why does He do it with such generosity? Yes, why so? It is because He wants Islam’s "Barakat" and "Bliss" spread throughout the world. If this message is conveyed during Hajj that the receivers of Sadakat need not be needy during next Hajj but givers to the new needy, it would thrill the whole world.
Imagine that in all past history of Pakistan, no regime has come to do the preliminaries of the Nafaz-e-Shariah, can this scheming and intriguing polity breathe new life in the giving and multiplying Sadakat? Can Shaukat Aziz do it, who cannot look straight with the CJP in the Steel Mill fiasco? He has learnt no lesson and is again trying to dump the New York Roosevelt Hotel.

People will echo this statement that none of the rulers came in with the love of God for the people and all went in abasement. One shouldn’t fagot that Pakistan was achieved by the majority of people who wanted Islamic Shariah – values and practices – to be implemented here. Who are those people that are meant to implement Shariah? The Qur’an defines those people: It is “those who strive hard in our cause.” And as an example presents the life of .Prophet Shuaib, who ended his preaching sermons with these heart-warming and inspiring words: “I desire no more to set things to right in so far as it lies within my power; but the achievement of my aim depend on God alone. In Him have I placed my trust, and unto Him I do always turn.” You will hear this piece” Wa ma taufiqi illa billahay” from many a Maulana, but there is no substance conveyed to the audience. The bottom line is that Allah first gives and asks people to spend out ot it. To Sadakat he increases them as big as a famous mountain. And he multiplies one dirham spent in His cause seven hundred time… What a bargain basement!
