DUBAI/ISLAMABAD: A number of lawmakers and leaders belonging to various political parties on Monday welcomed the announcement by Army Chief General Raheel Sharif that he won’t seek extension in his tenure and retire on the due date in November this year. In a statement, former president Asif Zardari said, “It is good that the rumors about army chief seeking an extension to his tenure have been set aside and a categorical statement has been made by General Raheel himself that he will retire on the due date.” He said that army is a premier institution of the country the cause of which will be best served if the tradition of extension in service of the army chief is not allowed to gain roots.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan also welcomed the statement. “General Sharif’s statement will strengthen the institution of the army. Nations are built on strong institutions,” Imran wrote on his verified Twitter account. “The nation’s respect for General Raheel Sharif has gone up after his statement refusing to seek an extension,” he added. Chief of the Awami Muslim League (AML) Sheikh Rasheed also appreciated Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif’s decision for not seeking extension, saying it would augment army’s prestige.
