Political leaders gather today on Balochistan

26 May, 2012

ISLAMABAD: Leadership of mainstream political parties will be attending the National Conference on Balochistan being organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) today (Saturday) to devise a strategy to overcome the worsening law and order situation in the insurgency-hit province.

The ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) also threw its weight behind the conference when it nominated Interior Minister Rahman Malik to represent the party in the conference. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will participate in the conference at its highest level as its president Nawaz Sharif will be attending the conference along with a delegation of the party.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan will also attend the conference along with important leaders of his party. Awami National Party (ANP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leaders will also participate in the conference. Nationalist forces of Balochistan like the National Party will also attend the conference.

SCBA President Yaseen Azad said all the parties contacted agreed to participate in the conference, adding that it showed the seriousness on part of all the parties about the Balochistan issue. He said situation in Balochistan had turned worst and East Pakistan-like conditions prevailed in the province as separatist sentiments were gaining ground.

Azad pointed out that the conference would take stock of the situation with different perspectives and will come up with a declaration to be forwarded to the government for implementation.

To a question, he said, "Let's see what recipe they suggest to bring an end to the woes of the province." He welcomed the apex court's suo motu notice on the Balochistan situation, but was of the opinion that the Supreme Court could not move beyond recovering missing persons.
