Philippines Invites President Musharraf To Address joint session of congress

ISLAMABAD, April 08 (Online): Chairman Senate, Mr. Mohammedmian Soomro, who is leading Pakistan's parliamentary delegation in the 112th Assembly of IPU being held in Manila from 31st March to 08 April, paid a courtesy call on Philippine counterpart, Mr. Franklin M. Drilon on Wednesday, according a message received from Manila here today.

During the meeting, agenda for the 112th Assembly of IPU was discussed. Both sides also discussed the social, economic and political issues concerning the agenda for the IPU Assembly.

President of the Philippine Senate referred to the President of Pakistan's forthcoming state visit to the Philippines. He said that President Musharraf's visit would lend a new impetus to the Pakistan-Philippine relations in many fields of mutual-benefit.

He also handed over a copy of a resolution, adopted recently by the Senate of Philippines, inviting President Musharraf to address the Joint-Session of the Philippine Congress during his upcoming visit to the Philippines.

Chairman Senate said that Pakistan and Philippine enjoys close friendly relations. He, however, underlined the need of more exchanges at various levels to further promote the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.

He said that exchanges of parliamentary delegations would promote inter-action and cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries. He expressed his thanks and appreciation for the warmth and hospitality with which the Pakistan Parliamentary delegation has been received in the Philippines. Chairman Senate who was accompanied by a group of members of the National Assembly and Senate of Pakistan during the meeting.

Later, the Speaker of Indian Lok Sabha, Shri Chatterjee Somonth also met Chairman Senate, Mr. Mohammedmian Soomro, They discussed bilateral relations and parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

Chairman Senate said that there was a need to gear up the composite dialogue process between the two countries with a view to strengthening the cause of regional peace.

The Speaker of Indian Lok Sabha underlined the need for accelerating the flow of cultural, students and intellectual's delegations to promote people to people contact. They were of the view that for the promotion of peace and economic development, Pakistan and India should divert their maximum resources for poverty alleviation to bring about qualitative changes in the socio economic life of their people.

The Speaker of Indian Lok Sabha invited the Chairman Senate to visit India, specially his constituency Shanti Nagar at any convenient time. Chairman Senate also extended invitation to him to visit Pakistan.
