Pakistan return supported
13 May, 2008
The restoration of Pakistan to the Commonwealth is being endorsed by the New Zealand government.
Pakistan was suspended in 2006 but has now been readmitted following a meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group in London.
Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters says Pakistan has demonstrated its commitment to returning to democratic governance and has repealed emergency provisions that violated constitutional freedoms.
He says New Zealand fully supports the decision to bring Pakistan back into the Commonwealth.
End.
