ISLAMABAD: Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, who is currently visiting Iran as the PM's special envoy, called on President Dr Hassan Rouhani, the Foreign Office said on Monday.

During the meeting, Aziz emphasised that Pakistan and Iran needed to work together for stability, peace and development of the region.

"Sartaj Aziz conveyed a message of friendship, brotherhood, harmony and cooperation from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to Dr Hassan Rouhani, underscoring the desire to strengthen relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran in all areas of bilateral cooperation, particularly in political, security and trade domains. The adviser handed over to the Iranian president a letter of the prime minister," an FO statement said, adding that the PM was expected to pay an official visit to Iran next month. He expressed the hope that bilateral relations and cooperation would gain strength during the tenure of President Rouhani and the present government of Pakistan.

Dr Rouhani stated that he was looking forward to the visit of PM Sharif, which, he hoped, would pave the way for enhanced cooperation and further cementing the brotherly relationship between Iran and Pakistan. He said that Iran considered Pakistan an important neighbour and a brotherly country.

Earlier, the adviser met Foreign Minister Javad Zarif. Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry was also present during the meeting. Chaudhry also visited the ECO Headquarters in Tehran and met ECO Secretary General Dr Shamil Aleskerov. Dr Shamil briefed Chaudhry on different ongoing initiatives and projects of the ECO.

Aizaz Chaudhry underlined the importance that Pakistan's leadership attached to regional integration for economic development.

End.
