Pakistan, Iran need to work for stability, peace: Zardari

TEHRAN: President Asif Ali Zardari has said that Pakistan and Iran need to work hand in hand for stability‚ peace and development of the region. He said this during his meeting with President-elect of Iran Hassan Rouhani in Tehran.
The two leaders discussed host of issues of mutual interest ranging from the bilateral relations to the overall regional situation and the challenges being faced by the region.
The president expressed the hope that bilateral relations and cooperation would gain strength during the tenure of President Rouhani and the new democratic government in Pakistan.
Discussing various areas of cooperation between the two countries‚ Zardari emphasised upon the need for the two countries to put the economic agenda on the forefront.
The president also touched upon various other bilateral projects that are in the pipeline and emphasised for their early completion.
He reiterated the need for strengthening the physical connectivity between Pakistan and Iran. He observed that extended road‚ rail and air-links would bring the people of the two countries closer to each other and would help boosting trade and economic activities in the region.
Discussing the regional situation‚ the president said Pakistan was a strong proponent of peace‚ stability and development in the region.
Rouhani said he looked forward to working with the leadership of Pakistan for strengthening of the bilateral relations.
President Zardari also met with former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Both leaders discussed the bilateral relations and matters of mutual interest during the meeting.
