ISTANBUL: President Mamnoon Hussain and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed their concerns over the situation prevailing in Yemen and emphasised an early resolution to the crisis. In a meeting with the Turkish president here, President Mamnoon said that Pakistan was making all possible efforts for an early and peaceful resolution of the crisis.

He stated that Pakistan’s commitment to Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity had been an important pillar of its foreign policy. The two presidents condemned the overthrow of legitimate government of President Mansur Hadi in Yemen by the Houthi rebels. President Mamnoon stated that economic ties between Pakistan and Turkey were not commensurate with the excellent bilateral political relations and that there was a need to find ways to expand economic partnership. He said that Pakistan had not been included in Turkey’s list of countries accorded GSP Plus and expressed the hope that the latter would review its position and agree to extend GSP Plus to Pakistan.

The president stated that a number of Turkish companies had expressed interest in Dasu Dam Project, which was nearing pre-qualification stage. Speaking on the occasion, President Erdogan said that he had encouraged Turkish companies to invest in infrastructure, construction and building of dams in Pakistan. He also stressed for enhancing bilateral collaboration in the field of technology.

President Mamnoon appreciated President Erdogan’s efforts for encouraging Turkish companies to invest in Pakistan’s energy sector, particularly, in hydropower projects. He expressed the hope that bilateral cooperation in the areas of defence, security and counter-terrorism would continue between the two friendly countries.
