ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on Tuesday rejected the nomination of Ch. Qamar Zaman as the Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and hinted at approaching the court against his nomination without taking the political parties on board.

In a statement here, PTI Information Secretary Dr. Shireen Mazari contended that the Leader of the Opposition Khursheed Shah should have consulted other political parties on the matter and rejected his claim that he had contacted the PTI repeatedly in this connection.

She alleged Qamar Zaman relied formerly on the PPP for his job and now on the PML-N and hence his reliance on these parties was a matter of grave concern. She described his nomination as the NAB chief a result of a deal between the PPPand PML-N.

When Chaudhry Qamar Zaman was nominated for the position of chief secretary Punjab before the elections, PTI Chairman Imran Khan had complained that Qamar was considered a loyalist of the Sharif brothers, so his appointment in the Punjab as head of bureaucracy would make the electoral process controversial and give an opportunity to some political elements to hammer and question the credibility of the interim set-up.

Cases of mega corruption are pending before the NAB against leaderships of the both PPP and PML-N. Both parties consulted all other parties before the appointment of caretaker prime minister and even caretaker chief ministers though it was not a requirement.

However, now on the question of accountability and appointment of chief of the country's sole accountability infrastructure, both parties, PPP and PML-N, intentionally avoided any such consultations.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan publicly demanded more than once that as his party had taken the second highest number of votes in the May 11 elections, the PTI must be consulted on the name of the new chairman NAB.

However, any such mistake of consulting the PTI could lead to disaster for the PML-N and PPP as a number of cases are pending against both. It is important that in some cases, very strong evidence is also available.

According to a previous chairman NAB, corruption of Rs8,000 billion was committed during the last five years. Senior government officials say that recovering such big plundered money could never be expected from a person like Qamar Zaman.

End.
