ISLAMABAD: A first information report (FIR) under section 86 (3)(b) of the Representation of People Act, 1976, has been registered against Waheeda Shah, a Pakistan People's Party (PPP) candidate, who had slapped a polling officer at Tando Muhammad Khan Police Station.

The chief election commissioner (CEC) had taken serious notice of the incident and directed the Sindh election commissioner to take necessary action under the law.

The slapping of assistant presiding officer at polling station No 16 set up in the Government Girls High School Tando Muhammad Khan by the contesting candidate Syeda Waheeda Shah on February 25 has shocked the nation.

The returning officer for PS-53 Ali Asghar Sial has been directed to take immediate cognisance of the matter, hold an inquiry (summary trial), hear the parties and pass the orders. The inquiry should be conducted at the office of the Provincial Election Commissioner in Karachi within minimum possible time, not exceeding seven days at the maximum.

On the complaint received from Mir Mushtaq Ali Talpur, another contesting candidate for by-election of PS-53, Tando Muhammad Khan, the commission has also issued notices to all the parties to appear before the commission on March 6.

The commission has also directed the inspector general of Sindh Police to proceed against the officials who were present on the occasion for failing to perform their duties and submit a report to the commission within a week.

In the meanwhile, it was further agreed without demur by the members of the ECP that the official result of the said constituency might be withheld till the completion of the inquiry.

End.
