PM Ashraf made no commitment on Swiss letter: AG
28 August, 2012
ISLAMABAD: Attorney General of Pakistan (AG) Irfan Qadir on Monday said that Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, during his appearance before the Supreme Court, had said nothing about writing a letter to Swiss authorities.
The attorney general said that the prime minister took decisions after consultation with the cabinet and that he did not take decisions in his individual capacity.
He said the prime minister had declared he would respect institutions. The constitution was followed, he said, adding that it would be followed in the future as well. According to the constitution, he contended, prime minister could not be summoned in court. He expressed hope that before the next hearing of the case, the government would find out a solution to end the standoff with the judiciary over writing a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
The attorney general said that though there was no middle way to settle the matter, there was hope that the matter would be resolved with consultation and understanding.
Meanwhile, renowned lawyer Tariq Mahmood said the NRO implementation case had become political and therefore its fallout would also be political.
He said that further proceedings in the case would destabilise the country's economy. The judiciary's morale had weakened due to the Dr Arsalan case, he added.
End.
