KARACHI: A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft escaped a disaster as suspected Taliban attacked Kandahar airport in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, PIA spokesperson said.

According to the spokesperson, the airport came under attack with missiles while its PIA fight pk-199 was preparing to take off from the Kandahar to Quetta on Tuesday afternoon.

"The flight PK-199, with 42 passengers on board, was ready to depart for Quetta when eight to 10 rockets were fired from multiple sides at the airport", PIA spokesperson said in a statement adding that the aircraft, crew and passengers on board remained safe in the attack.

The plane was grounded temporarily as the airfield was shut down following the attack. However, officials confirmed that the field was subsequently cleared for operation and that the PIA flight departed shortly.

End.
