Opposition finalised 3 names for the appointment of CEC

ISLAMABAD - The government and the opposition on Wednesday finalised three names for the appointment of the new chief election commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan.

Talking jointly to journalists outside the Parliament House here, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khurshid Shah and Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar said that they have agreed on the names of Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza - Federal Shariat Court Chief Justice, Justice (retired) Tariq Pervez and Justice (retired) Tanvir Ahmad Khan for appointment of the CEC after the consultations.

The names of finalised candidates have been sent to the National Assembly Speaker for onward submission to the relevant parliamentary committee. Khurshid said that all the political parties have demonstrated political maturity on the appointment of the CEC. Dar said that he was confident that the process of the appointment of the chief election commissioner would be completed by December 5.

He said that extensive consultations were held with all the opposition parties and the government allies for the new chief election commissioner including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Awami National Party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and others.

It is pertinent to mention here that on Tuesday, the Supreme Court while hearing the case pertaining to the appointment of the chief election commissioner had directed to complete process of the appointment of the CEC by December 5.
