NOWSHERA: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti on Thursday said the Awami National Party (ANP) wanted peace in Karachi and bitterness with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) had been removed in the best interest of the people.

"We are in contact with President Asif Zardari about the Karachi situation and hope the situation will improve," the chief minister told reporters after inaugurating the anti-polio vaccination campaign in Pirpiai in Nowshera district.

He said the differences with the MQM were now over as "we had to move ahead for peace and prosperity through unity." The chief minister termed the working relations of the coalition partners in the provincial government exemplary because both the ANP and PPP were working for the wellbeing of the people.

Hoti said Governor Masood Kausar, who was also present on the occasion, was the constitutional head of the province and there was mutual cooperation and coordination among the top hierarchy of the setup in the province both at the political and administrative level.

While administering anti-polio drops to children along with the Governor to inaugurate the four-day immunisation campaign, the chief minister urged the teachers, Ulema, the people and media to play their due role in the eradication of polio.

He said the help of every segment of the society was essential to make Pakistan polio-free as 48 cases of polio-infected children were reported in the country including 11 in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during 2010. He expressed concern that in 2011already 84 cases including seven in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been reported.

He paid glowing tributes to district coordination officers (DCOs) of Shangla and Dera Ismail Khan who were supervising anti-polio campaigns in their districts by going to each and every village.

He said the effective participation of the DCOs in the polio campaign would specially be mentioned in their Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs) as an achievement and sluggish response as failure in the respective districts.

He said polio-infected children were reported in areas where parents refused to get children immunised against the disease. To a query, he said 291,000 flood affectees in the next three months would receive the second installment of†Rs40,000 cash support through the Watan Cards. Wafa Saeed, the Unicef representative in Pakistan, also spoke on the occasion. She urged parents to get their children vaccinated to make Pakistan free from polio.

Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement said it has no reservations about the Awami National Party (ANP) and it welcomes the statement of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti regarding the MQM, a press release stated.

The MQM said that we want peace in Karachi at all cost and it is in the interest of the country. We want all the bitterness in Karachi to be removed and washed away as soon as possible. Both the parties accepted that they should sit together and promote a positive dialogue and accept the existence and mandate of both the ANP and the MQM with true sincerity.

MQM hoped that if such positive attitude continued of both the party leaders and workers than the MQM will be successful in creating a cordial atmosphere all over the country. It hoped to create unity, policy of reconciliation, love, affection and brotherhood. The MQM wants peace and harmony all over the country including Karachi, the release added.

End.
