Mufti Naeem's son-in-law among seven gunned down in Karachi

KARACHI: Maulana Masood Baig, son-in-law of renowned scholar and head of Jamia Binoria Mufti Naeem, was shot dead by gunmen in North Nazimabad's Hyderi locality on Wednesday. Six other people were killed in violence in the city on Wednesday. Maulana Masood was affiliated with Jamia Binoria and was a lecturer at the Karachi University. His murder is apparently part of sectarian violence. Maulana Masood was also the chief administrator in the girls' education department of Jamia Binoria. According to reports, four suspected militants on two motorcycles stopped his vehicle near Hyderi Market when he was heading home from Karachi University and fired at it indiscriminately. Baig died on the spot while his driver was injured. The gunmen escaped from the scene. The dead body of Maulana Masood was shifted to the Ziauddin Hospital. More than a dozen people have lost their lives in a spate of what is being described as sectarian killings in recent days despite a Rangers-led targeted operation being underway in the city. On Saturday, the elder son of former senator Allama Abbas Kumaili, also a cleric, was gunned down and his two guards were wounded in a targeted attack in Azizabad. Allama Ali Akbar Kumaili, 40, was shot dead in what was said to be a sectarian attack by investigators. Ali Akbar Kumaili was known for his oratory skills and for his style of addressing Majalis-i-Aza. President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed grief and sorrow over the killing of Maulana Masood. In their condolence messages to the bereaved family, they prayed to God for eternal peace of the departed soul and also for the courage of the family to bear the loss with fortitude. Meanwhile, a man was gunned down near Malir's Liaquat Market. A firing incident occurred in Orangi Town near Islam Chowk, where a youth, Yasir, was killed. In another firing incident at Irani Camp in Orangi Town, unidentified motorcyclists killed two men, 26-year Ghulam Hyder and 50-year-old Shabbir Hussain. A body bearing torture marks was recovered from Orangi Town. Also, two groups exchanged fire in Lyari, killing a man and his son in the crossfire. A man, Kabul Jan, sustained critical wounds in a firing incident at Shafiq Morr. End.
