Miliband visits IDPs camp, assures to help Pakistan

SWABI: British Foreign Secretary David Miliband has said that Pakistan is suffering a great struggle in which the government and the people of Pakistan are confronted with insurgency that has severely hit the daily life of civilians.
While addressing a press conference here at Chota Lahore Camp in Swabi David Miliband expressed Britain’s commitment to assist Pakistan for the durable peace in the region.
Miliband said that UK is well-aware that Pakistan is passing through critical time. He said that Britain has long-standing links with Pakistan. He said that it is his personal and strong commitment to help Pakistan. He said that other countries also wanted to work with Pakistan.
British Foreign Secretary further said that this is his 5th visit to Pakistan in the last two years. He further said that his visit was aimed at to express and show solidarity with IDPs and to discuss practical ways to work together.
In response to a question he said that United Kingdom and European Union had already provided aid of $400 million to Pakistan. Miliband said that Britain will continue to play its proactive role for development in Pakistan.
David Miliband said that British government has a long-term support i.e economic and social reconstruction in Pakistan which spends over four years of one billion dollars. In addition, Britain has given aid of US$ 30-35 million for the IDPs in the past few weeks.
Similarly, he said that government of Pakistan is satisfied with the performance of the security forces engaged in carrying out operation in Malakand division.
Earlier, David Miliband was briefed about the relief operation in IDPs camps and government efforts to effectively tackling the issue of IDPs.
