QUETTA: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Friday labelled the attacks against the Hazara community as ‘ethnic cleansing’, and said that the court had no words to condemn the violence the community was facing.

The CJP was leading a two member Supreme Court bench along with Justice Ijazul Hasan that was hearing a suo moto case against the targeted killings of Hazaras at the apex court’s Quetta registry.

The CJP clarified that he had taken suo moto notice because he believed that these attacks amounted to the ethnic cleansing of the Hazara community.

Mr Nisar had taken the suo moto notice on the 2nd of May, and had ordered the provincial government, Levies forces, the police and the interior ministry to submit reports on the violence.

Advocate Iftikhar Ali, who was representing the Hazara community in the case argued before the bench that the Hazaras faced systemic discrimination and were denied admissions in universities.

He also said that the community was forced under pressure to sell the stores it owned, and all this led to the community facing substantial personal and financial loss.
