KARACHI: The Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) has announced to observe a day of mourning today (Saturday) over "extra-judicial killing" of its workers.

This was announced by MQM leader Haider Abbas Rivzi while addressing a press conference at Nine Zero on Friday.

Haider Abbas Rizvi appealed to traders and transporters to shut their business on Saturday.

The MQM leader said that extra-judicial killing of party workers was being carried out. He said there was no information about 45 missing activists, adding he did not know whether missing workers were alive, dead or in the custody of law enforcement agencies.

Haider Abbas further said Muhammad Suleman and his nephew were arrested by police from Korangi Crossing on February 3.

He said according to the post-mortem report of Suleman, he was brutally tortured. "It is the tenth incident of extra-judicial murder since the operation launched in Karachi".

He also demanded human rights groups to take notice of the extra-judicial killings of MQM activists. He said that innocent citizens were being victimised due to the operation. "The list of missing persons is on the rise," he warned. On the occasion, MQM leader Nasreen Jalil said that Karachi police chief Shahid Hayyat should also be nominated in the FIR of party activist's killing.

Meanwhile, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday appealed to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain to take back his party's decision to observe a day of mourning in Karachi on Saturday (today).

Minutes after MQM leader Haider Abba Rizvi's press conference, in which he announced a day of mourning in Karachi on Saturday, Bilawal said that the decision was a larger conspiracy against Altaf Hussain. In his message on social media website Twitter, Bilawal said, "Lots of sympathy for MQMs legitimate concerns. But they will loss all good wills if they take Karachi hostage again with strike politics." Bilawal asked Altaf Hussain to tell his party workers that threatening the people of Karachi, traders and transporters live on television is not the philosophy of the MQM chief.

"I appeal 2 (to) UncleAltaf 2 (to) call of strike. Pls (please) tell MQM ppl (people) tht (that) threatening ppl (people) of KHI (Karachi), traders & transporters on live TV is not ur (your) phil (philosophy) of love." Bilawal went on to say, "I've warned about anti-Altaf forces within MQM.I fear this strike is part of a larger conspiracy vs. uncle Altaf. I hope he doesnt fall 4 (for) it."
