LAHORE: Lahore will become the largest cultural spot for kite flying by 2010, Syed Zulfiqar Hussain, the organiser of Lahore Basant Festival, promised the press at a local hotel on Sunday.

“The Lahore Basant Festival 2005 will start from February 3 and will continue till the 6th,” he said. He thanked the Punjab chief minister for announcing Basant on February 6.

The festival will kick off with a seminar to highlight the importance and promotion of kite flying and culture. Several exhibitions, a show at Wagha Border and ‘Malangi Dhamal’ will also be held.

“A five-year plan has been formulated to promote Pakistan’s kite flying culture and boost culture and trade. The project aims to encourage overseas investors, improve Pakistan’s image, introduce and promote Lahori culture and encourage small and medium enterprises,” said Hussain.

“A committee of experts, under the patronage of Yousaf Salahuddin, has been set up,” he said, adding that other committee members would be announced shortly.

The festival head said that according to estimates, 55,000 overseas Pakistanis would enjoy and celebrate Basant this year. He stressed participants to maintain a code of conduct and cooperate with law enforcing agencies.
