ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has constituted a three-member judicial commission to investigate the attack on anchorperson Hamid Mir that left him seriously injured on Saturday.

According to the Prime Minister's Secretariat, a formal request will be made to the chief justice of Pakistan for the nomination of the three members of the commission. The commission will finalise its investigation in 21 days.

The government has announced a reward of ten million rupees for any information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators, an official statement said. The development pertaining to the formation of the judicial commission followed a top-level meeting at the Prime Minister's House on Sunday chaired by Nawaz Sharif.

The premier, after reportedly discussing the matter with his close confidantes, including Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan, Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid and Defence Minister Khaaja Asif, is said to have approved the establishment of the judicial commission, following which the Interior Ministry would send a formal request to Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Tassaduq Hussain Gillani sometime next week, official sources said.

In this regard, the written approval from the PM Secretariat to the Interior Ministry and Cabinet Division, to further pursue the matter, would be issued soon, the officials informed. Early, on Saturday, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif told this correspondent that that the formation of a committee to investigate the incident was under consideration.

In the Sunday's meeting, the prime minister and his close associates were said to be unanimous in their respective contentions that a Supreme Court-mandated judicial commission was the only appropriate and empowered forum to probe the allegations as serious as the involvement of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) in the attack on Hamid Mir.

"Judicial oversight can bring to light everything in black and white as far as this episode is concerned," the officials quoted the PM as saying. The PM's spokesman and Information Minister Senator Pervaiz Rashid said the government would send the request for the formation of the judicial commission to the SC soon.

End.
