ISLAMABAD: Jets bombed insurgent hideouts in the North Waziristan Agency and killed at least 13 militants on Tuesday, the military said.

The strikes were carried out at Degan village, a stronghold of Taliban militants in the North Waziristan tribal district. "Seven terrorist hideouts were destroyed and 13 terrorists were killed, including foreigners, by jet aircraft strikes in Degan in North Waziristan Agency today," a military statement said. More than half a million civilians have fled the long-awaited offensive unleashed by the military on the tribal area last month.

Two suspected hideouts of terrorists were destroyed in shelling by the Pakistan Army gunship helicopters on Tuesday. Meanwhile, a private TV channel reported that the army launched an operation against suspected hideouts of terrorists in Mashko Forest of Diamer District of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) where 10 foreign tourists were killed by terrorists last year. Police commandoes and GB Scouts also participated in the operation.

Sources said that the operation was launched on the request of the GB government, as two days ago terrorists attacked a police station in Dodoshal area, freeing notorious criminals and escaping after snatching official weapons from the cops. Terrorists behind in Kohistan and Babusar killings are also thought to hiding in the said forest of Diamer.
