ISAF claims killing al-Qaeda member
25 July, 2012
ASADABAD: Afghan and foreign forces killed an al-Qaeda member during an operation in Want Waygal district of Nuristan on Tuesday, ISAF said. Local residents, however, said the deceased was civilians.
"During the operation the security force identified the al-Qaida-associated insurgent Khanjar, also known as Turab. The security force engaged Khanjar and killed him," the NATO-led force said in a statement.
It said Khanjar was associated with both Taliban and al-Qaeda and "provided safe-haven to al-Qaida members operating throughout Nuristan and coordinated Taliban activities in the region. He also oversaw the training of Taliban in the province."
The statement said follow-on assessment of the area confirmed no civilians were harmed and no civilian property damaged in the operation.
End.
