PARIS: The families of French victims in a 2002 car bombing in Pakistan said they are asking for President Nicolas Sarkozy to testify in a complex investigation into the circumstances leading up to the attack.

A judge must decide whether to follow up on their request, and is unlikely to order Sarkozy to testify because he can claim judicial immunity as an acting head of state.

The families said they are also seeking testimony from former President Jacques Chirac and former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin.

French investigators have been probing whether alleged shady aspects of a 1990s French defense deal with Pakistan may have set the stage for the car bombing that targeted French engineers, killing 14 people.

End.
