QUETTA: Four terrorists were killed and eight policemen were injured in an attack on Quetta airport on Thursday night.

Balochistan Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti confirmed the incident. "I have received information about exchange of fire in an area lying at some distance from Airport and Smugli Airbase," he told reporters.

The minister also said that the Bomb Disposal Squad had defused explosives near Khalid Airbase.

Local residents heard at least eight blasts and gunfire that continued for around half an hour. Helicopters buzzed overhead, they said.

Security personnel injured in the firing have been shifted to the Bolan Medical Complex.

Security forces have cordoned off the areas in and around the airport as well as the airbase. Both airbase and airport are located in the west of the city. One security man was injured in the incident and heavy firing was continuing around the premises of the attack.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations, no terrorist entered the base. Two rockets landed inside but caused no damage.

Pakistan has suffered several recent attacks on its airports.

In June, a Taliban attack killed 30 people at the airport in Karachi, the southern city home to 18 million people. The same month, terrorists fired on a plane landing in Peshawar, killing a woman passenger and narrowly missing the pilot. Peshawar airport was also attacked in 2012, when nine people were killed. In 2012, nine people were killed in an attack on an airforce base in Kamra.

End.
