KARACHI: The main flag hoisting ceremony was held in the provincial capital to mark the 66th Independence Day of Pakistan at the mausoleum of the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah here Tuesday.
Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan and Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah hoisted the national flag, while the national anthem was also read.
Total 65 pigeons were also freed in the air on the occasion of the Independence Day of the country.
The students of different schools wearing colour outfits also presented various national songs, which were highly appreciated by the audience.
Representatives of Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Rangers Sindh also visited Mazar-e-Quaid, laid floral wreaths and offered Fateha for the soul of Quaid-e-Azam and prayed for prosperity and development of the country.
Foreign ambassadors, senior government officials and people in large number also visited the Mazar-e-Quaid to show their affection for the founder of Pakistan.
Sindh governor, chief minister along with members of the Sindh cabinet also laid floral wreaths, offered Fateha and marked their impressions in the visitors' book at the Mazar-e-Quaid.
Sindh ministers, including Pir Mazharul Haq, Mohan Lal, Haji Muzaffar Shujra and Rafiq Engineer, Shoaib Bukhari; provincial advisers Rashid Rabbani, Haleem Adil Sheikh, Sharmila Farooqi and Siddiq Abu Bhai, head of Pakistan Hindu Council ex-MPA Ramesh Kumar, Administrator Karachi Muhammad Hussain Syed and Commissioner Karachi Roshan Ali Shaikh, Inspector General Sindh Police Fayyaz Leghari and other notables were also accompanied with the Sindh governor.
Sindh governor while talking to media during visit to mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam said country needs unity at the moment, which is among the three golden principles of father of the nation.
Dr Khan said no single political party or government could cope with the challenges, which are being confronted to the country and concerted efforts are needed.
He said the countrymen would also have to come forward to play their role for betterment of the homeland and to eliminate the problems. Special prayers were also offered for the prosperity... integrity and solidarity of the country on the occasion of 66th Independence Day celebrations. The auspicious event of the Independence Day was celebrated across the metropolitan with zeal and zest. People from all walks of life including students, teachers, doctors, police officials and traders enjoyed the celebration.
Various gatherings and programmes pertaining to the day were held in educational institutes, hotels and other spots in the city where a large number of government officers, media people, citizens, students and teachers were present.
People were of the view that the day is a opportunity to become a integrated nation leaving behind ethnicity, sectarianism for progress of the country.
People coming to pay tribute to Quaid-e-Azam said that we have to act according to his vision so as to get rid of different crises whether they are regarding law and order situation, economical development and other internally or externally.
However the roads were relatively empty in morning as private transport was thin on the roads on account of holiday whereas traffic on the roads in evening was crowded as people begun thronging in bazaars for shopping of Eid. Shops in markets were open at afternoon even in the absence of costumers.
A smartly dressed contingent of the Pakistan Naval Academy assumed duty at the change of guard ceremony at Mazar-e-Quaid.
