ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain said on Sunday that economic indicators have started showing positive trends as a result of effective policies of the government.

In his address at the concluding ceremony of three-day President of Pakistan Gold Medal Golf Championship 2014, President Mamnoon said that there is a need to institutionalise sports to provide opportunities to the talented youth to enable them to come forward and perform. "We should also make use of the contemporary techniques and mechanisms in training our players to enable them to compete at the international level," the president said. He said sports played an important role in the make-up of individuals and society, and there were many examples of individuals and collective brilliance in many games.

Mamnoon said the leading golfers from across the country participated in this tournament over three days of inspiring and competitive golf for which he would congratulate the winners and those who were not able to make it to the podium this time. The president said golf was fast gaining popularity and becoming a leading sport in the country, as it had some notable performers in this arena. "They stand out among the comity of golf players as an inspiration for youngsters. It is also incumbent on them to pass on the techniques of golf to the younger generation to help them excel at the national and international levels," he stressed.

The president said establishing academies staffed with professionals, who could teach the art of playing golf to an ever-increasing number of budding enthusiasts, would be a step in the right direction. He also congratulated the president and the managing committee of the Islamabad Golf Club for organising the tournament. Mamnoon told the gathering that due to strenuous efforts of the government, economic indicators were showing upward and positive trends and cited successful floating of Euro Bonds. He said with completion of a string of development projects, including Pak-China economic corridor, the country would be put on path of progress and prosperity.

The president noted that during his recent visit to China, four of the development projects were put on fast track by the Chinese leadership at their request. The government, he said, is endeavouring to overcome the energy problems and with completion of a number of power projects, 22,000MW of electricity would be added to national grid. He asked the people to be patient to get fruits of these efforts launched by the government in all spheres, focussing upon the relief for the general public.

He also called upon the people to make concerted efforts for eradication of menace of corruption from society and play their individual roles in this regard. Later, the president gave away prizes to winners in different categories. In professional category, Muhammad Munir got 1st position with a cash prize of Rs 190,190, Muhammad Shabir 2nd position with cash prize of Rs 127,940 and Sajjad Khan third position with cash prize of Rs 79,650. Muhammad Munir was also awarded with a gold medal while Youngmi Han in ladies and Tariq Mehmood as amateurs net winners, were decorated with gold medals.

In amateur net category, Tariq Mehmood as net winner, Saifullah Goraya and Ahmed Sarwar as runners-up were given trophies. The president also gave away trophies to Ghaffar Ahmed, winner of senior professionals category, Ghani Khan as runner-up with cash prizes each, Miss Maryam Khan winner of Ladies Gross, Tahira Nazir and Dr Fareeda Naseer as runners-up, Youngmi Han winner of ladies net winner, Ami Qin and Shahzadi Gulfam runners-up in the same category, and a number of other winners in senior amateurs, subsidiary events and Sarena Hotels invitees.
