BRUSSELS: President general Pervez Musharraf and chief of foreign policy of European Union (EU) Javier Solana have exchanged views on a set of bilateral, regional and international issues in a 2-hour meeting here Wednesday.

Both the leaders discussed at length Pakistan role with reference to Lebanon, Kashmir and Afghanistan situation and war on terror and social, political and economic dimensions of EU.

Javier Solana endorsed the views of President Musharraf saying Pakistan has a significant standing in the comity of nations and it has stood by the international community particularly in war against terrorism. EU will boost its relations with Pakistan and European Council will continue to play its key role in this respect.

Citing to Kashmir issue, he said EU is satisfied over the composite dialogue process between Pakistan and India. EU is ready to play its role on this count if need be. Both the countries are engaged in peace dialogue and the upcoming meeting between President Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Havana is a good omen . EU is optimistic in this regard.

End.

Reader Comments:

European Union has reservations about Pakistan's stability.

We are in a transition towards democracy. Europeans too had had their share of similar uncertainties and lack of leadership in their countries. Pakistan has yet to become an industrialized democratic country. As such it is just ad hoc-ism working in our relationships with the European Union. The trouble is that the President has no lawful role in the government with his "uniform" on. But he is envisaging staying on for another and still another term. These facts are too well known in the European Union. On the other side, the question looms large as to what next in Pakistan?
