ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday suspended the membership of 26 lawmakers after their failure to submit details of their assets with the commission.

After the extension of over twenty days in the deadline of September 30, 26 members of parliament and provincial assemblies failed to comply with the requirement of electoral laws and submit the details of their assets with the election body. Among those suspended are: Senators Mustafa Kamal of the MQM and Faisal Reza Abidi of PPP, three members of National Assembly, four Punjab Assembly members, one from Balochistan, seven from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and nine from Sindh.

The notification of ECP issued on Tuesday stated that the membership of the lawmakers will be restored once they have satisfied the commission regarding their assets. The ECP first set the deadline of October 15 for submission of asset details and later extended it due to Eidul Azha holidays. The lawmakers are required to submit the details of their assets under the Representation of People Act 1976, which binds all the elected representatives to declare their asset details annually on September 30.

Those whose membership was suspended are: Mustafa Kamal and Faisal Reza Abidi from Senate. Abdul Rehman Kanju, Shahjehan Baloch, Alizeh Iqbal Haider from National Assembly. Masood Shafqat, Ali Abbas, Waheed Asghar Dogar, Abdul Majid Niazi from Punjab Assembly and Abdul Rauf Khoso, Ghullam Rasool Jatoi, Syed Fasih Shah, Muhammad Ali Bhutto, Aziz Ahmed Jatoi, Bashir Halipoto, Jamil Bhargari, Sania and Mukesh Kumar Chawla from Sindh Assembly. Muhammad Arif, Muhammad Khan Bahadur, Zahid Durrani, Iftikhar Ali Mashwani, Ziaullah Bangash, Shah Faisal Khan and Sardar Zahoor from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, and Dr Samah Ishaq Baloch of Balochistan Assembly.

End.
