EC can't act against accused politicians: Fakhruddin
22 October, 2012
ISLAMABAD: Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim on Monday said that in spite of the Supreme Court's verdict on the Asghar Khan petition, the election commission could not initiate proceedings against the concerned politicians.
Ebrahim moreover said that no reference had been forwarded by the Senate's chairman to the ECP on the issue of Rehman Malik's possible disqualification.
Speaking to media representatives in Islamabad, Ebrahim lauded the apex court's ruling but said the ECP's rules did not allow it to proceed against politicians accused of taking bribes.
He added that Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has assured him of appointing district returning officers in the upcoming elections.
When asked about Rehman Malik's disqualification in the dual nationality case, the Election Commissioner told that the ECP can take action against the minister only after receiving the reference from the Senate chairman.
End.
