KARACHI, March 10 (Online): MQM parliamentarian and minister of state for religious affairs Dr. Aami Liaqat has allegedly purchased fake degrees of Masters in Islamic Studies, Masters in Business Administration and PhD from 'The Trinity College and University, Spain which is an unrecognized university, besides the university is not included in the list of recognized international universities available with Karachi University, reports Karachi based Urdu Daily.

In a stunning investigation by the Urdu Daily it has been documented and proved that Dr Aamir purchased fake University degrees to contest the 2002 general election, forced the Karachi University officials to authenticate these degrees in a single day and prevented any investigations by the newspaper to dig deep into the unavailable records at the University.

The newspaper, however, persisted with the three-month long probe and was able to obtain the copies of the "University" degrees Dr Aamir used to make himself eligible to contest the election for a National Assembly seat on the MQM ticket from Karachi. He won because of the party ticket and when MQM joined the Musharraf coalition, he was made Minister of state for Religious Affairs in the cabinet.

Dr Aamir did not have a graduate degree in 2002 and according to the investigation he surfed web site in Spain, The Trinity College & University, which boasts about providing Bachelors, Masters or even Doctorate degrees, without attending any class or college. "Everything by Email" the web site of the College says right on top with the big slogan: "Get your degree today."

Dr Aamir purchased his "Bachelor of Arts in Islamic Studies" degree (Serial No: P-2002227 Dated March 17, 1995), got his "Master of Arts in Islamic Studies" degree (No: P-2002341 Dated March 15, 2002) and his "Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Studies" degree (No: P-2002528 Dated April 5, 2002).

The newspaper reports claims that the minister of state for religious affairs Dr. Aamir Liaqat secured his PhD degree in just three weeks after his Master's degree, if the documents are to be believed.

Karachi based Daily Ummat contacted the Karachi University authorities to find out how these web site Email degrees were authenticated in a single day, in writing, by the then registrar of Karachi University, Prof. NM Aqil Burney. The registrar received the application from Dr Aamir on August 24, 2002, days before filing of his nomination papers for the NA election and authenticated his degrees through letter No PA/2002 Dated August 24, 2002.

Prof. Aqil, however, did leave some elbow room by stating in his letter that the authentication was "provisional" and the final decision would be conveyed to the applicant in due course of time. That decision was neither needed nor taken nor conveyed to anyone as Dr Aamir had used the provisional certificate to get himself elected to the Parliament and the matter was pushed under the rug.

When the newspaper contacted Prof Aqil later to ask how he could issue the authentication without referring the documents to the Equivalence Committee, he admitted that Dr Aamir had come to him with degrees from some Trinity College Spain and he authenticated them on the pot.

Prof Aqil kept no record of these degrees and when the newspaper contacted the current registrar to verify whether any such record was kept, no one could trace the file, as none existed.

When the newspaper contacted the Higher Education Commission in Islamabad, the official authority on the matter, to verify whether the Trinity College & University of Spain, which issued the degrees to Dr Aamir, was a recognized institution by Pakistan, Director General Mohammed Javed Khan informed the newspaper vide a letter Dated February 23, 2005 that the Trinity College was not recognized. The letter confirmed the forgery of Dr Aamir and abetment in the forgery by Prof Aqil to facilitate his candidacy in the election.

Daily Ummat also obtained copies of the degrees Dr Aamir presented to the Election Commission and during the investigation found that the Trinity College and University, Spain had placed exactly similar samples on its web site, offered the same day for a price.

The investigation leaves Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain, MQM Chief Altaf Hussain and General Pervez Musharraf in an embarrassing political dilemma. Musharraf has been promoting Dr Aamir as the heir apparent of Altaf Hussain himself and the way his curve was rising was creating serious apprehensions within the MQM circles as well.

End.

Complete drama from day 1

Not sure what to write but completely disappointed. The fact remains that Pakistani Government is still the same with no improvement.General Pervaiz Musharraf should look into this matter and i feel bad for Pervaiz too. How confident he is about his government but this is only one example out of many. People of such type have led down pakistan many times and i am not sure which way Pakistan is going right now? i hope that all the generals ,majors and commanders being recruited in different departments are without such fake degrees.
Anyways, militarian require no degree to get a position in any field. They are far from being scrutinized. "Jis is laathi us ke bhains"

Tayyab Arif, Pakistan - 14 March, 2005

Is it really true?

I think Mr. S Khan is confusing this particular Trinity college with other legal online degree awarding institutions. If you look at the website of this college , you will find that they are literally selling degrees. So you can't compare it with Allama Iqbal Open Univ. or any similar University.
However, I am still confused about the whole story. We should wait to listen from Dr. Amir what he has to say about this issue. Only then can we decide whether he is a lier or not. Till now its just one sided story.

Speak up and defend yourself prevaricator...

Following line is quoted from Aamir Liaqat profile at geo.tv website.

"His thesis on “Islam and Terrorism” earned him a doctorate from Trinity College in 2001".

Geo TV,all time favorite for it's unbiased news coverage should look seriously into this issue.

Never chase a lie. Let it alone, and it will run itself to death.

Let's see, how far Dr.Aamir Liaqat runs for his survival.(Guilty until proven innocent)

It's dissapointing that a religious representative can be so dishonest. If he has no foundations, he doesnt deserve to be in his position. Also the whole system needs to be revamped!

NO DENIAL FROM DR AAMIR

Surprisingly no denial has come from Dr Aamir and MQM. This strengthens the suspicion that he has been holding degrees that he purchased without studying.
Next, if the allegations are correct a petitton to unseat Dr Aamir should have been filed by any of the defeated candidates. It has not been as yet.

Fake degree holder religious Alim

It is often said why Muslims both as individuals as well as collectively as an Umah with each passing day are going down the drain. The only reason is its leaders scholars preachers all are mostly characterless. I do not want to use the word “moulvi and Mullah” because I know hundreds of Muulvis and Mullahs are very simple very nice and speak from their heart about Islam but they in their ignorance can not come out to think of any change still remaining within the teachings of Islam. If we look properly it would be found despite so much talk against Mullah or Moulvi till today no finger has been raised about financial irregularities against any Mullah or Moulvi compared to politicians and bureaucrats. They are only creating trouble by remaining stick to what they believe and treat a thinking which is other than to theirs as Kafir. But those who are educated but self labeled scholars particularly who preach day and night Islam like this MQM Alim Online are in fact the real cause of deterioration of condition of Muslim and giving bad image to Islam. Young generation and foreigners when see speaking such Alims like MQM On Line Alim Dr. Amir Liaquat Hussain having fake degree get wrong idea about Islam and Muslims as a whole and cannot think it is just an individual's act. This is why there is no convincing spirit left today in Islamic lectures. MQM is filled with bogus degrees holders. Some years ago someone wrote that he went to Karachi in 1965/19970 and found every third house in Drigh Colony, P.I.B Colony, Nazimabad and Dastgir Colony having the name plate with Alig (Ali Garh University Degree Holder). The person rightly stated that if all those Alig name plates were counted it would exceed the number of Muslim students having obtained Degrees till then from the University. Majority of these Aligs cannot produce their Degrees on the ground it was left in India at migration.

JAHALAT KI INTEHA

I think such a person should b immediatly charged for fraud and must b banned to take part in politics for the rest of his life.

MUHAMMAD NADEEM, Pakistan - 18 March, 2005

Not Moulvis or Mullas

The person rightly stated that if all those Alig name plates were counted it would exceed the number of Muslim students having obtained Degrees till then from the University. Majority of these Aligs cannot produce their Degrees on the ground it was left in India at migration.

PS: Some people have extreme biased minds. They cannot even accept naked facts.

One has commented that since the newspaper which disclosed bogus fake degree o the MQM Relgion Minister is of a Jamat-e-Islami hence the facts cannot be accepted. IN today's developed life merely to reject believing a thing that it was from Jamat-e-Islami is really a matter of ponder for real educated people but nto those hold bogus Alig. Degrees. If a Jamat paper has revealed it the point is so far no body has contradicted the item. Rather the MQM minister concerned who has been accused of having this fake degree when contact directly for interview stated “he had no comments and there is only Election Commission which can raise this question”.

One says this is all drama as the Minister concerned is MBBS degree holder and his cousin had been a colleague of him. Though point is very logic that when Minister is MBBS and he is graduate why should he need another degree to make himself graduate for filing election papers. The same point again comes if Minister really has MBBS degree then why he submitted another degree obtained from Spain On Line. During his interview he did not contradict that he did not submit any such degree rather he said it was only election commission which should raise the issue if degree was fake or genuine.

A third person having no sense has said someone might have obtained this degree in the name of Dr. Amir Hussain to defame him. A wonderful notion., If someone has bogusly obtained this Degree in the name of MQM minister then how could he submit it to election commission in the name of Alim. The Alim himself admits having deposited with degree with election commission. He only raises the question that it is only the election commission which should and can raise any objection and can ask him any question.

Only one has raised a real genuine question that he has so much good knowledge of Islam and speaks on TV very convincingly hence why does he need a fake degree. This is really a understandable question. Answer is many people have very good knowledge of a subject but they do not have any degree. Some have really genuine degrees but do not have ability or full knowledge on the subject. It is like same some people on stage make a very good speech but cannot write that perfectly and some people write very good columns, articles but cannot speak on diase. Some degrees are obtained, particularly in this age of technology On Line, just to claim some allowances, to add degrees on visiting cards etc to impress and similar things.,

Mirza, Pakistan - 18 March, 2005

Didn't feel shy when visiting Madinah Taiyaba?

Well basically this is not the comments, but a question, which Mr. and not Dr. Liaqat should ask himself, he visited few days back Roza-E-Rasool with the same face he has.
He didn't feel any sorry that he was bearing this shameful deed on his shoulders even there. This is beyond my ability to understand how one can do this. If all these reports are true, which is quite obvious, then I have legal right to demand resignation from Mr. Liaqat. 'Sir' please leave the office immediately this is not the right place for you. Things have been changed now, and Pakistani government and people don't accept you anymore. You look very nice on TV programs. False expressions and smile on your face. Thanks very much for your services till now. I will be very grateful to you if you cooperate.

Behti Ganga main

The current problem with the people of our country is that every body is trying to wash his hands in running Ganga...Illa MashaAllah. Aamir Liaqat simply wanted to do the same either by hooks or by crooks. He simply do not have to do anything with Islam. He wants power and money (which is proved with his these fake degrees). he is a talkative fellow and capture people minds by his talks but he could'nt capture their hearts. Most of the time it seems that he is trying to Act on the screen as mentioned by Ms.
Shugufta. I believe only the person who speaks from his heart and speaks with loyalty can capture people hearts.

Kamran, Pakistan - 21 March, 2005

Put him behind bars ...

since he is proven guilty, he should be put behind bars, so a message is given to all other peoples and no other person could do it in future. The system must be kept as transaparent even if minister is accountable for his deeds in his own govt.
And those peoples must be criticized too on media who helped him grow and make him popular without assuring of his credibility.

Farhan, Pakistan - 21 March, 2005

as expected!

well any body can tell from the way he dresses n looks that he is non-religious completely i cant expect such looks from a person who has been so deep in islamic studies. and what else can u expect from a Altaf Hussain's follower..as leader as followers no surprise..from Musharraf to Altaf Hussain its same..i m from london and would like to tell u that Altaf Hussain lives on concil's Wazeefah ..n on the money taken from pakistanis in karachi by force.god help this nation.putting him behind bars wont do much..v should shoot on sight people like these who dont even think once before playin up with thier own relgion ISLAM!

Hussain, United Arab Emirates - 21 March, 2005

Consider him as a Human

even if this is true seeing the amount of knowledge he possesses and how well he uses it, him being a polotical as well as a religious figure for our country we must not just take his respect away, he has already been publicaly humiliated and no one will respect him for a long time from now, the government should give him a chance and ask him to give all the exams of the degrees he claims to have in the shortest human possible time if he goes thru them in a good way at least he will be what he claims to be , his respect will take time to come back but the way we are treating him is as if he is our born enemy we should not behave like this....after all he is a human and no religion gives the right to one human to abuse another....if he did wrong that dosent mean we do the wrong too.
