Corruption in WAPDA... By M. Khan
10 October, 2011
This is with reference to a report that appeared in the press disclosing that a corruption case to the tune of Rs 90 billion had been detected by the auditor general, which had occurred during the period of only one year. Prime Minister Gilani has already labelled WAPDA a 'white elephant' as did the former prime minister, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, nearly 36 years ago. A period of 36 years is more than sufficient to judge the performance of any government-owned organisation. There have been frequent corruption cases in WAPDA for a long time, as reported by the press, but it is a fact that no one dares take drastic action against the misappropriation of money by WAPDA.
I request the chief justice to take suo motu action against WAPDA, where corruption of billions of rupees has become a matter of routine and goes unimpeded. At the same time, I suggest that President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani order the privatisation of WAPDA on an immediate basis in the national interest of the country.
