KABUL: The Ministry of Defence said Monday the commandoes unit in Rishkhor had been transformed into Special Forces.

Addressing a gathering held in Rishkhor in this regard, the Chief of Staff of the Afghan National Army Sher Muhammad Karimi said the Special Forces had been trained and equipped with state of the art equipment, and that they could conduct operations in every part of the country.

"The activation of the Special Forces amid the third phase of security transition is very important. Now the Afghan forces can carry on their activities in much better way," he added.

Karimi said the centre of commander of the Special Forces would be taken from Rishkhot to Darul Aman, and that two additional units would be formed in Gardez and Shindand.

On the occasion, commander of the ANA Special Forces, Syed Abdul Karim said the Special Force had acquired training on the level of foreign forces, adding they possessed modern equipment for operations during night.

Some Afghan analysts, however, believe the ANA troops were currently incapable of conducting special operations.

Military analyst, General Amirullah Aman told AIP the commandos could not conduct activities of the Special Forces.

An agreement has already been signed between ISAF Commander General John Allen and defence ministry of Afghanistan that the special operations would be carried out by the Afghan forces. The foreign forces could only support the Afghan troops in the special operations. Afghan people complain the foreign forces were still taking part in the special operations alongside the Afghan forces.

However, the defence ministry did not accept the allegations.

End.
