ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif on Thursday categorically denied receiving Rs 2.5 million during the making of the IJI in 1990.

"I neither met Younas Habib (former Mehran Bank chairman) nor received money from him," stated the former premier in a talk show telecast on a private TV channel.

Nawaz Sharif, whose name surfaced during the hearing of the Asghar Khan case among those who had allegedly taken money distributed by the establishment in an attempt to influence the 1990 elections and to prevent the PPP from coming to power, backed the apex court's directive of an inquiry by the FIA to expose those who took millions of rupees.

The PML-N chief recalled that industries owned by his family paid Rs 920 million in taxes during 1990, and considering this accusing him of receiving only Rs 2.5 million from the agencies was a joke. He also said that leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had opposed an inquiry through the FIA because of some reservations, and he did not mean to be disrespectful to the Supreme Court.

End.
