Altaf Hussain steps down; rejoins hours later
15 September, 2014
KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Sunday withdrew his decision to step down keeping in view pleas and insistence of his workers.
Before his withdrawal, the MQM chief had renounced the party leadership due to non-organisational behaviour and negligence of Rabita Committee members and office-bearers. Workers gathered at Nine Zero when they heard the news and shouted pro-Altaf slogans. They insisted that Altaf should reverse his decision. On the occasion, people witnessed highly emotional and tearful scenes. Most of the workers expressed their selfless devotion in an emotive way.
Reversing his decision, the MQM chief said that he would give one last chance to the Rabita Committee. He added that senior workers from 1978 would have to come forward. "Every sector will have to give names of three candidates for Rabita Committee. These people should be educated, capable and honest and should not be involved in anti-social activities. They will be interviewed and made members of Rabita Committee. When we have clean, hard-working and honest members that we would send negligent Rabita Committee members in their areas," Altaf said.
He said, "Now it is the responsibility of movement's senior and sincere workers to assure me that the new members would be selected for the Rabita Committee on merit." He added, "If they cannot let me live in peace then they should not hurt me either." He said, I have taken back the decision of stepping down for the last time on your pleas and insistence. When the workers heard this they chanted slogans."
End.
