PESHAWAR, January 27 (Online): Veteran politician and Leader of Awami National Party (ANP) Abdul Wali Khan died on Thursday after protracted illness. He was 89 years of age.

Abdul Wali Khan slipped to comma after brain hemorrhage two days back.

The condition of late Abdul Wali Khan deteriorated in Charsadda and afterwards he was immediately shifted to Peshawar where he was under extensive treatment.

The Namaz-e-Jinaza of late Leader Awami National Party (ANP) Abdul Wali Khan will be offered in Wali Bagh Charsada on Friday (today) and later buried in his native graveyard.

As soon as news was heard regarding death of Leader Awami National Party (ANP) Abdul Wali Khan, large number of political leaders, ANP leaders, friends, relatives, thousand of people from all walks of life gathered at the residence of his daughter Dr. Ayesha Galilee.

They condoled with the family members and prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in perpetual peace and give courage to the family members to bear the irremediable loss.

Late Abdul Wali Khan was born on January 11, 1917 in Charsada. He received his early education from Azad Islamia School. Wali Khan was the first student of the respected school. He was admitted in the year 1922 in the school.

In 1933, he completed Cambridge, in those days, he had problems of eyes, and doctors advised him to discontinue studies.

He entered politics in 1942. He was sent to jail for the first time in 1943 under to FC law, however was later released.

He became the Member of All India Congress Committee in 1947. He was the Joint Secretary of Pakhtoon Khwa province. He was arrested on June 15, 1948. He was kept in Haripur Jail.

During this period, Babara incident occurred on August 12. A protest demonstration was held but it turned to be violent as open bullets were fired in which 600 people were martyred.

In February 1949, his first wife Taj Bibi died in Mardan Hospital. He had two sons. One son died with her and one is alive.

In May 1949, Wali Khan was shifted to Mach Jail Balochistan from Haripur Jail. In 1951, he was sent to Quetta Jail along with his friends.

In the year 1952, he was shifted to Dera Ismail Khan Jail and then in 1953 he was again shifted to Haripur Jail whereas on November 14 1953, Federal Court released Wali Khan.

It must be mentioned that Wali Khan was continuously in prison for five years, five months and five days.

One-Unit was established in 1954, but both Bacha Khan and Wali Khan fully tried to dissolve it, after which new party was formed naming National Awami Party (NAP). Wali Khan was elected as the central president of NAP in June 1968. He was arrested in November 13, 1968 and kept in Montgomery jail and later shifted to Gujrat jail and released on March 1969.

In 1970, he became the member of National and Provincial Assembly. It was four times that life attempts were made on veteran politician Wali Khan but he escaped. He was again apprehended on his way to Gujrat from Lahore in 1975 and shifted in Sahiwal jail. NAP was banned in February 1975 and accused of killing Hayat Sherpao.

Late Wali Khan were shifted in Rawalpindi Jail and later moved in Sukkur and then Hyderabad jail. After three weeks of imposing marital law in 1977, General Zia ul Haq met Wali Khan and his jailed friends in Hyderabad jail and held talks with them. Wali Khan and his friends released in December 1977.

A widow, two sons and three daughters survived Wali Khan.

CONDOLENCE

President General Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, NA speaker, Chairman senate and federal ministers have expressed grief over the sad demise of veteran politician Khan Abdul Khan who expired Thursday after the long illness.

In their separate messages President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz condoling the death of veteran politician Wali Khan prayed to Allah Almighty to grant as the departed soul eternal peace and strength and fortitude to the bereaved family to bear his irreparable loss.

Paying rich tributes to late Wali Khan, the President and PM said that he came from a rare breed of human beings who led their lives based on their principles and conviction. The entire politician life of late Wali Khan was an embodiment of these qualities.

The sad demise of Khan Abdul Wali Khan is indeed a great loss for the nation, they said.

Chairman senate Muhammad Mian Soomro, Speaker National Assembly, Chaudhry Amir Hussain, Deputy Speaker Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob, Defence Minister Rao Sikandar Iqbal, and Federal Minister for Interior Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao in their separate message of their condolences also expressed grief over the death of the great leader.

"He was a great politician and a social reformer and has left indelible marks in the political history of the subcontinent and Pakistan and he would be remembered for a long time to come", they said.

Federal Minister for Interior Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao by expressing his heartfelt condolence said nation could not forget his social and political services for the nation particularly for the people of NWFP.

"May Allah rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant the bereaved family the courage to bear the loss with equanimity", said the messages.

Wali Khan’s death closed important chapter of politics: Rashid

Information Minister Shaikh Rashid Ahmed said that an important chapter of country’s politics closed after the death of veteran politician Wali Khan.

"Wali Khan struggled for the strengthening democracy and democratic institutions in the country throughout his life, as his death created a space in country’s politics", Information Minister noted while talking to pressmen here on Thursday.

He said that late Wali Khan played an exemplary role to get unanimously passed the 1973 constitution.

His speeches in National Assembly are the part of country’s history, Mr Ahmed added.

He noted that Wali Khan played pivotal role to take forward the Bacha Khan cause and raising voice for resolving problems confronted by the masses of NWFP.

About Balochistan situation, Information Minister observed that the situation in Balochistan had became normal and operation against miscreants had been stopped there.

To a question about government strategy regarding Senate elections, he said that the decision in this connection would be taken jointly by Party’s president, Secretary General, Prime Minister and three provinces chief ministers.

Mr Ahmed said that strict security measures would be taken during the holy month of Muharram and sectarianism would be dealt with an iron hand.

Earlier addressing the 27th annual Hazrat Imam Hussain Conference, he said that masse do not like sectarian violence in the country and those people who fan sectarianism must be discouraged.

He said that people should not cast vote for extremists in the elections, as these people sparked sectarian violence in the country.
