6 killed in suicide attack on Balochistan IGP

13 May, 2013

QUETTA: Balochistan Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Sukhera narrowly escaped a suicide attack on Sunday that killed at least six people and wounded 46 others, officials said.

IGP Sukhera had just entered his residence in Quetta when a suicide bomber in a vehicle laden with explosives blew themselves up outside.

"At least two policemen, three paramilitary soldiers and one passerby were killed outside the inspector general's residence and 46 others were wounded," Home Secretary Akbar Durrani told AFP.

A huge amount of explosives were packed into the vehicle and the blast left a deep crater, with the explosion shattering nearby windows and sending debris flying, he said. Senior police official Mobin Ahmed told AFP the police chief was safe, while another police official said the blast was so loud it was heard all over the city.

Rescue teams and law enforcement agencies rushed to the site and shifted the dead and injured to the hospital. The windowpanes of several government premises and other buildings, including that of media organisations, were smashed in the blast. The four-story building of Quetta Press Club was also damaged, while a journalist sitting inside the press club received injuries.

The injured also included children who received wounds when windowpanes of their houses smashed due to blast. The law enforcement personnel, including Frontier Corps and police, cordoned off the entire area to trace the suspects. Further probe was underway.

Meanwhile, six rockets were fired in different areas of the provincial capital on Sunday night. Police sources said that unknown men fired rockets from the mountains which landed in different areas of the metropolis. One of the rockets landed in a ground near a checkpost causing no damage to life.
